Three in the morning, headphones off, the beat playing out of the laptop speakers while you look for your keys. The drums are still there. The bass line you spent an hour on has gone, and what is left is a thin buzz where a note used to be.

The best synth VST for hip hop is a monosynth: two or three oscillators, a resonant lowpass filter, and an envelope fast enough to stay out of the drums' way. One voice at a time is what the bass lines and the leads in this music are actually made of. Ours is JOURNEYMAN, $59 for Mac and Windows. Free ones exist, and they are named further down.

## The short version

- **What to look for**: two or three oscillators, a resonant lowpass, an envelope that opens fast

- **How many voices**: one is plenty for bass and leads; save polyphony for keys and pads

- **For trap**: glide between notes, and a filter that moves on every note you play

- **Free route**: Vital's Basic tier and Surge XT, both free from their own makers

- **What kills a patch**: writing in an octave no phone, laptop or earbud can reproduce

- **Our answer**: JOURNEYMAN, $59: three oscillators, two ladder filters, 200 programs

## The three jobs a hip hop synth has to do

Sort the job before you shop. Almost every synth sound in rap, trap, drill and boom bap falls into one of three roles, and an instrument that serves one of them well is often mediocre at the others.

**Bass.** One note at a time, low, loud, carrying the harmony on its own. This is the role that decides whether the beat works in a car. It wants a clean low fundamental, a filter you can park low, and an envelope that lets go before the next kick.

**Leads and hooks.** Also one note at a time, usually between 1 kHz and 4 kHz where nothing else in the beat lives. Bells, flutes, plucked synths, the melody that sticks. The sound has to be distinctive within about three notes, because that is all a hook gets.

**Keys, pads and texture.** Chords under the top line, held and filtered back so they read as air rather than as parts. This is the only one of the three that genuinely wants polyphony, and it is also the one a sample will often do better than a synth will.

Two of the three roles are monophonic by nature. That is the whole reason the answer to "best synth plugins for hip hop" keeps coming back to a one-voice instrument instead of the biggest library on the market.

## Why the best synth plugins for hip hop are mostly one voice

A monosynth plays one note at a time and puts everything it has behind that note. Every oscillator, the whole filter, the whole envelope, one pitch. When you play a second key before releasing the first, the instrument does not start a new voice; it slides the one voice it has to the new pitch, and that slide is a musical event rather than a limitation.

The practical consequence is level. Three oscillators stacked on one note, detuned a few cents apart, produce a single fat pitch with a slow beat in it. Split those same three oscillators across a three-note chord and you have one thin oscillator per note, three pitches fighting for the same low register, and a low end that turns to mud the moment the kick lands.

The second consequence is glide. Hand a monosynth two overlapping notes and it travels between them. A polysynth starts a second voice and leaves the first to decay. Every sliding bass figure in trap, drill and modern rap depends on that first behavior. The full comparison is in [monosynth vs polysynth](https://gazillionindustries.com/monosynth-vs-polysynth/).

## What the controls do, in the order you touch them

Subtractive synthesis is a short list of stages in a fixed order, and every synth named on this page runs some version of it. Oscillators make a raw tone. A mixer balances them. A filter takes part of the spectrum away. Envelopes decide when the filter and the volume move.

Top left makes the sound, top right takes things away from it. Under the blue headers is modulation; under the cream ones is how it gets played.

**Oscillators and octave.** Pitch is set twice: by the key you press and by the octave switch, marked in feet on JOURNEYMAN's three oscillators. Play C2 at 8' and the fundamental is 65.41 Hz. The same key at 16' is 32.70 Hz, and at 32' it is 16.35 Hz, under the bottom of human hearing and under every consumer speaker ever sold. Most weak bass patches are lost there, before a filter is touched.

**Wave.** A triangle is nearly pure: a fundamental with very little above it. A saw contains every harmonic. A square contains only the odd ones, which is why it reads as hollow and woody. JOURNEYMAN puts that range on one continuous WAVE knob per oscillator, from triangle through saw and square to pulse, so you sweep it and stop where the note sounds right instead of picking from a list.

**Detune.** Two oscillators at slightly different pitches beat against each other at the difference frequency. Offset them by 8 cents at 110 Hz and they drift apart by about 0.51 Hz, one slow swell every two seconds. That number is most of what people mean by a synth sounding fat. On JOURNEYMAN the FREQUENCY knobs on oscillators two and three do it against oscillator one.

**Filter.** A lowpass filter passes what is below the cutoff and attenuates what is above it, at a slope set by how many poles it has. A pole is 6 dB per octave in the textbook sense, so a three-pole and a four-pole setting land an octave above cutoff 6 dB apart, which is half the amplitude. JOURNEYMAN has two ladder filters, one per channel, with a shared CUTOFF, a SPACING control that offsets one from the other, RESONANCE, and a poles switch for each. There is a longer piece on [the ladder filter](https://gazillionindustries.com/ladder-filter-explained/), and another on [cutoff and resonance](https://gazillionindustries.com/filter-cutoff-and-resonance/).

**Envelopes.** Attack, decay, sustain and release, twice: one set moving the filter, one set moving the volume. The filter envelope does most of the character work. A short decay with the amount turned up gives the click and thump that lets a bass note read as percussive.

[JOURNEYMAN](https://gazillionindustries.com/journeyman.html) is our monosynth for Mac and Windows: one voice, three oscillators, two ladder filters, two envelopes, two modulation busses and 200 programs across basses, leads, keys, pads, percussion and fx, for $59. Every program is already wired to the mod wheel and the touch surface, so the patches move before you have learned a single knob. There's a demo on the page.

## Best synth VST for trap: glide, filter and the low octave

Trap asks a synth for two specific things. The first is pitch that travels between notes instead of jumping. The second is a low register that survives being played back on hardware designed for podcasts.

Glide is the easy half. Turn it on, set the rate, play overlapping notes, and the pitch ramps from one to the next. The rate is the whole performance: too fast and it is a blip, too slow and the note arrives late over the bar line. JOURNEYMAN puts GLIDE on a switch with GLIDE RATE beside it, and the trigger mode matters as much as the rate, because single trigger is what lets a legato phrase slide without retriggering the envelope on every key.

The low register is the hard half. A phone speaker is a few millimeters across and produces almost nothing under a few hundred hertz. A note at 32.70 Hz is inaudible on it, but its harmonics at 65.4, 98.1 and 130.8 Hz are not, and those are what tell a listener the pitch. Write the part low, then make sure the harmonics exist: pick a wave that has them, or add them afterwards.

Adding them afterwards is a saturation job, covered in [how to make bass audible on phone speakers](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-bass-audible-on-phone-speakers/) and [how to distort 808s](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-distort-808s/). Choosing the synth for the job is covered in [best bass synth VST plugins](https://gazillionindustries.com/best-bass-synth-vst/).

For slides that bend a sampled sub rather than a played note, see [how to pitch a sample](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-pitch-a-sample/).

## Best free synth VST for hip hop

Two free synths are worth the download, and one of them is probably already on your machine.

**Vital.** A spectral-warping wavetable synth. The Basic tier is free, and its own page describes that tier as the full synth with all features, with 75 presets and 25 wavetables; the paid tiers add presets, wavetables and skins rather than capability. Strong on wavetable leads and modern plucks, at no cost.

**Surge XT.** Open source, free, and unusually deep for the price. Its own site describes it as a subtractive hybrid whose patches hold two scenes, each a separate instance of the whole synthesis engine apart from effects, and it ships over 2,800 factory patches. If you like reading a manual, this is the most instrument per zero dollars on offer.

**Whatever your DAW already ships.** Every major DAW includes a subtractive instrument that will do the three jobs above at a passable level. Open the instrument list before you open a browser. A broader list of what is worth installing is in [best free VST plugins](https://gazillionindustries.com/best-free-vst-plugins/).

Here is the honest limit of the free route. The good free synths aim at wavetable sound design and they are excellent at it. None is built as a one-voice instrument with its controls laid out in playing order, and that shape is what makes a bass line come out of your hands rather than out of a preset list. Our free plug-in is a compressor rather than a synth, so we will not pretend otherwise: for the synth itself we are asking $59.

## Best synth plugins for hip hop that people actually name

These are the names that come up in every thread. Prices below were read on each maker's own page while this was written; they move, so check before you buy.

**Xfer Serum 2.** $249 on Xfer's own store, with wavetable, multisample, sample, granular and spectral oscillator types in one instrument, and version 2 was a free upgrade for version 1 owners. It is the default answer for wavetable leads and it earns that. It is also four times the price of a monosynth, and a bass note uses one of those five oscillator types.

**Arturia Pigments.** $199 on Arturia's own page, with six synthesis methods across three engine slots, sixteen filter types and over 1,700 presets. A sound designer's instrument. The color-coded interface is the best in the category for seeing a modulation route at a glance.

**LennarDigital Sylenth1.** €139 excluding VAT on LennarDigital's store, or €9.95 a month until it is paid off. Four unison oscillators, eight unison voices each, so 32 voices on a single note, with two filter sections and seven master effects. It has been the supersaw workhorse for well over a decade and it still is.

**Spectrasonics Omnisphere.** Their flagship, combining several kinds of synthesis with a very large factory collection, currently 18 libraries. Its price would not load on the Spectrasonics page while this was written, so we will not quote one. Treat it as a sound library that happens to synthesize.

Every one of those is a good instrument. None is a one-voice synth, and if the job in front of you is a bass line or a hook, you are buying a great deal of machinery to play one note at a time. That is the gap JOURNEYMAN sits in at $59, roughly a quarter of the first price on that list. The cheaper end of the market is sorted out in [best synth VST under 100](https://gazillionindustries.com/best-synth-vst-under-100/).

## Build a bass patch: the steps

Do this once from scratch and the rest of the instrument stops being mysterious. Values are starting points on JOURNEYMAN's 0 to 10 knobs, and the sequence works on any subtractive synth with the controls renamed.

- Press INIT to start from a blank program.

- In the MIXER, switch OSC 1 on and set it to 10. Leave OSC 2, OSC 3, NOISE and EXT IN off.

- Set OSC 1 OCTAVE to 16'.

- Set OSC 1 WAVE to 0 for a triangle, then raise it to about 3 for a saw.

- Switch OSC 2 on in the MIXER at 8 and set its OCTAVE to 16'.

- Turn OSC 2 FREQUENCY until you hear one slow beat about every two seconds.

- Set the filter switch to DUAL LP and set both FILTER A POLES and FILTER B POLES to 4 POLE.

- Set CUTOFF to 2, RESONANCE to 0 and SPACING to center.

- Set VOLUME ENV to ATTACK 0, DECAY 4, SUSTAIN 8, RELEASE 1.

- Set FILTER ENV to ATTACK 0, DECAY 3, SUSTAIN 0, RELEASE 1, and AMOUNT to about 3.

- Set KB AMT to 5 so the filter opens as you play up the keyboard.

- Set KEYBOARD to LAST, TRIGGER to SINGLE, switch GLIDE on and set GLIDE RATE to 2.

- Play the part and watch the OVERLOAD lamp. If it lights, lower the MIXER channels rather than MASTER.

- Bounce eight bars and play them back on a phone before you change anything.

The last step is the one people skip, and it is the only one that tells you the truth. The patch that sounded enormous in headphones at step thirteen is the same patch that disappeared at three in the morning by the front door.

## Leads, keys and the rest of the 200 programs

A lead patch is the bass patch with three things moved. Take the octave up to 8' or 4', open the cutoff until the tone carries against the drums, and shorten the volume decay so notes stop rather than smear. Add resonance last and in small amounts. More on that role in [best lead synth VST plugins](https://gazillionindustries.com/best-lead-synth-vst/).

Keys and pads are the awkward case on a monosynth, and the honest answer is to play them as parts rather than chords: a root line and a separate top line, recorded twice and panned apart. More work than holding a triad, and it sounds less like a preset. Producers have worked this way for thirty years, which is part of why [Dilla type beats](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-dilla-type-beats/), [Madlib type beats](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-madlib-type-beats/) and [boom bap](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-boom-bap-drums/) have the harmonic looseness they do.

JOURNEYMAN ships 200 programs across basses, leads, keys, pads, percussion and fx, an average of around 33 a category. They are a starting point and a teaching aid: load one, look at where the knobs landed, work backward. Every one is wired to the mod wheel and the touch surface, so a patch responds to a gesture before you have learned a single control.

The touch surface is the part people use longest. X moves cutoff, Y moves the spacing between the two filters, and the vertical travel of your finger brings in resonance, all three printed under the pad. It turns a static patch into a performance without automation lanes, and it records as automation if you want it to.

## What a monosynth costs you

One voice means one voice. You cannot hold a chord, you cannot let a note ring under the next one, and you cannot build a pad by stacking fifths in a single instance. Every chord becomes a second track, and every track is another fader, another bounce and another decision. On a busy session that adds up.

You also give up the preset economy. A wavetable synth with 1,700 presets is a browsing instrument; you scroll until something is interesting and then write to it. A monosynth with 200 programs is a playing instrument, and if you work by browsing, the smaller list will feel thin for the first week.

And there is no sample engine here. If the sound you need is an electric piano, a flute or a vinyl string stab, this is the wrong tool and a sampler is the right one. A synth that claims to do everything usually does the thing you need adequately and nothing memorably.

## After the synth: getting it into the beat

A synth part almost never sits right raw. Three moves fix most of it, in this order.

First, level. A patch with three oscillators open can arrive far louder than the sampled parts around it. Set it before you process it; the reasoning is in [gain staging](https://gazillionindustries.com/gain-staging/).

Second, harmonics. A synth bass that vanishes on small speakers needs content above the fundamental, and saturation is how you get it. BEEFY is our saturation, soft clipping and loudness plug-in, $19, with JUICE, BEEF and COOK on the front and SOFT CLIP and LIMIT as output stages. Working method is in [how to make a synth sound thicker](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-a-synth-sound-thicker/) and [how to make bass fatter](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-make-bass-fatter/).

Third, the drums around it. If the synth and the kick are arguing, the fix is usually on the drum bus rather than on the synth. DRUGS is our one-knob bus compressor for drums, free for Mac and Windows, with DOSE, a GAIN control and a soft ceiling on the output. It is a single knob and it is the cheapest thing on this page. Background in [glue compression](https://gazillionindustries.com/glue-compression/), and the ducking move in [sidechain compression](https://gazillionindustries.com/sidechain-compression/).

If a synth bass and a sampled sub are both in the arrangement and the low end still will not behave, the problem is arrangement rather than processing. [How to mix kick and 808](https://gazillionindustries.com/how-to-mix-kick-and-808/) goes through it note by note.

## Questions people ask

### What is the best synth VST for hip hop?

A monosynth with two or three oscillators, a resonant lowpass filter and fast envelopes, because two of the three synth roles in this music are monophonic. Ours is JOURNEYMAN at $59 for Mac and Windows: three oscillators, two ladder filters, glide and 200 programs. How to judge one is in [best monosynth VST](https://gazillionindustries.com/best-monosynth-vst/).

### What are the best synth plugins for hip hop if I only buy one?

Buy for the role you fill most often. If that is bass and hooks, which for most beatmakers it is, one monophonic synth covers more of your week than a large library will. If your beats live on held chords and evolving texture, buy the wavetable instrument instead.

### What is the best free synth VST for hip hop?

Vital's Basic tier, which its own page lists as the full synth with all features, 75 presets and 25 wavetables at no cost. Surge XT is the other one, open source and free, with over 2,800 factory patches. Before either, check the instrument your DAW already installed. Free will get you a long way on leads and textures, and a little less far on a played monophonic bass.

### What is the best synth VST for trap?

The one with glide on the front panel and a trigger mode that does not restart the envelope mid-phrase. Sliding pitch between overlapping notes is the defining gesture of the style, and a polyphonic synth answers those overlapping notes with new voices instead. JOURNEYMAN has GLIDE with its own rate control, selectable note priority and single or multi trigger, which is the combination that makes slides play cleanly.

### What are the best synth plugins for trap bass specifically?

A low octave, a triangle or saw, a lowpass parked low, a short filter decay for the thump, and glide for the slides. That is a small feature list and almost any monosynth has it; what differs is how fast you get there. After the synth, the bass needs harmonics to survive small speakers, which is a saturation step rather than a synth setting.

### Do you need a polyphonic synth to make beats?

No, and most producers use polyphony less than they expect. Bass is monophonic, hooks are monophonic, and chords are often sampled rather than played. When you want a pad, record the monosynth twice as two lines and pan them apart: wider than a triad in one instance, at the cost of one pass.

### Is Serum worth it for hip hop?

For wavetable leads, risers and modern sound design, yes, and its own page prices Serum 2 at $249 with lifetime free updates. For a bass line you are buying five oscillator types to use one. Plenty of people own a large wavetable synth and a small monophonic one, and reach for the small one more days of the week.

### Where should you download synth plugins?

From the maker's own site, always. These searches land on aggregator pages that reprint the developer's blurb word for word, wrap it in a download button and sit years behind the current version. Read about a synth wherever you find it, then get the file from the developer.

## What JOURNEYMAN does

JOURNEYMAN is our monosynth for Mac and Windows, $59, in VST3 and AU with a standalone version on macOS. One voice. **Three oscillators**, each with an OCTAVE switch marked in feet and a continuous **WAVE** knob that sweeps from triangle through saw and square to pulse, with FREQUENCY on the second and third for detune, plus 1-2 SYNC and 3-1 FM. A five-channel **MIXER** sets the balance of OSC 1, OSC 2, OSC 3, NOISE and EXT IN, each with its own on switch, and an OVERLOAD lamp tells you when you have asked for too much.

**Two ladder filters**, one per channel, share a CUTOFF and are pushed apart by **SPACING**, with RESONANCE and KB AMT beside them, a DUAL LP or HP/LP switch, and a three or four pole selector for each filter. A **FILTER ENV** and a **VOLUME ENV**, both ADSR, with an AMOUNT control on the filter envelope that goes negative as well as positive.

Modulation is an LFO with RATE and SYNC and two busses, one on the mod wheel and one on the pedal, each with SOURCE, SHAPING, DESTINATION and AMOUNT and its own programmable source and destination. Performance is **GLIDE** with a rate, note priority, single or multi trigger, bend range up and down, and a **TOUCH SURFACE** that maps X to cutoff, Y to the spacing between the filters and finger travel to resonance. **200 programs** cover basses, leads, keys, pads, percussion and fx, and every one of them is already wired to the mod wheel and the pad.

Take the patch you built in fourteen steps back out to the laptop speakers by the front door. The note that went missing was never the synth's fault. It was sitting in an octave the room could not play, and now it is an octave up with the harmonics to prove it.
