What SKRUU is
Two knobs that do not touch each other. PITCH moves the pitch. TIME moves the length. Speed it up while pitching down, or the other way round. Lock either one and play the other, or run both.
Elastic
The part that makes it playable. With ELASTIC on, the knob is sprung: move it, let go, and it travels back to where it was. RETURN is how long that takes — free, or quantised to the bar. BITE is how hard it commits.
SLOPE is the road it takes home, and there are sixteen: RAMP, GLIDE, SNAP, WHIP, HANG, CREEP, STAIRS, HALVES, RATCHET, DRUNK, LURCH, BOUNCE, WOBBLE, TREMOR, KICK, CLIFF. Six are smooth, five are stepped, five overshoot and come back. Pitch and time each get their own.
How it works
- PITCH runs from −20% to +10% in 128 states, and reads out in semitones as well as speed. Unity is marked. Double-click returns to it.
- TIME runs from −50% to +25%, and moves nothing but the length.
- PITCH LOCK and TIME LOCK hold one while the other moves.
- SAMPLING GRADE is the grid the whole thing is transported on: 31.25 kHz, 15.62, 7.81 and 3.91. It is not an EQ preset — the lower grades put a staircase in, and the staircase is the sound. All four record all the time, so the grade can be changed while a note is sounding.
- RETURN, BITE, SLOPE and GRID belong to the elastic sections.
- DRAG and MIX are in the tree. DRAG is how long the new speed takes to arrive; at the floor it is instant, turned up it is a hand on the platter.
The display
A pitch comparator, in semitones. What went in against what came out, with the octaves marked, so how far off the record you are is a picture rather than a number you have to trust. Above it the host's tempo, and whether the transport is locked to it, in time with it, or drifting.
Two finishes
Black and brushed aluminium. Not one panel at two brightnesses — a component of this kind was sold as one or the other, and they are different objects. The recessed displays stay dark glass in both, because that is what a recessed display is.
Formats and compatibility
On macOS, SKRUU installs as an Audio Unit (AU) and a VST3 plug-in, plus a standalone application. macOS 10.13 or later, universal binary for both Apple Silicon and Intel.
On Windows it is a VST3. Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. It arrives as a zip you drop into your VST3 folder; there is no installer yet.
Zero samples of latency. Any sample rate your session runs at. No internet connection required after activation.
