The Space Echo

A loop of tape running free inside a box, past an erase head, a record head and three playback heads, with a motor whose speed you can change while it plays. Everything people love about it follows from those two facts: the tape is a loop, and the speed is a control.

The Roland Space Echo is a tape delay built around a free-running tape loop rather than reels. On the RE-201, the model most people mean, audio is recorded onto the loop and picked up again by three playback heads at different distances, so a single mode selector gives you different rhythmic patterns of repeats. A spring reverb sits alongside it. REPEAT RATE changes the motor speed, which is why moving it while the machine is running bends the pitch of everything already on the tape.

What the mode selector actually selects

People assume twelve modes means twelve delay times. It does not. The selector chooses which of the three playback heads are active, and whether the spring reverb comes with them.

Modes 1, 2 and 3 are each single head on its own, nearest to furthest. Mode 4 combines heads 2 and 3. Modes 5, 6 and 7 are those single heads again with reverb added. Modes 8, 9 and 10 are the head pairs 1+2, 2+3 and 1+3. Mode 11 is all three heads together, and mode 12 is reverb alone with no echo at all.

So the machine offers four useful tap patterns — one head, two heads at two different spacings, three heads — and then offers each of them with and without the springs. Once you see it that way, choosing a mode becomes a rhythmic decision rather than a lucky dip.

Why the pitch bends

The delay time is the distance between the record head and a playback head divided by the tape speed, and REPEAT RATE changes the speed of the motor. The service documentation gives a range of roughly 12 to 40 centimeters per second, which is a ratio of more than three to one, so sweeping that control moves the pitch of whatever is already recorded on the loop by more than an octave.

That is the single most recognizable gesture the machine makes, and it is not an effect anybody designed. It is what happens when you change the speed of a tape that already has audio on it. TRIPLE OG is a cassette transport rather than an echo, which makes it the other half of this: send your delay returns through it and the repeats come back with tape on them.

What else is in the box

A three-spring reverb tank, which is a large part of the character and is the reason mode 12 exists at all. A DC brushless motor, chosen for speed stability. And a genuine consumable: Roland quoted the tape loop's life at around 300 hours, after which it needs replacing, and the heads need cleaning like any tape machine. The wow, the flutter and the gradual dulling of the repeats are not simulated. They are the medium wearing out while you use it.

The family

The line goes back to Kakehashi's earlier echo units built under the Ace Tone name before Roland existed. The RE-100 and RE-200 came first, then the RE-201 in 1973, which is the one that became the standard. Later machines are frequently described as identical and are not: the RE-301 Chorus Echo has four playback heads and six modes, and the RE-501 has six modes and balanced XLR connections. The compact RE-150 is a simpler machine again.

Roland has reissued the concept digitally several times, most recently in pedal form, and the originals remain in demand and in need of servicing.
