Free drum bus compressor and drum compressor plugins
Gazillion Industries ·
The break sounded right in the sampler and thin once it was in the beat.
The kick still hits and the snare still cracks, but the room behind them has gone, and with it
the reason you picked that break. You do not need to buy anything to get it back.
The free drum bus compressor to start with is DRUGS. It is ours, it is free for Mac and Windows,
and it was built for this bus and nothing else: one knob called DOSE makes the drums denser while
the peak level barely moves. If you want to set every number yourself, TDR Kotelnikov and
Klanghelm DC1A are free too, and the settings below work on either.

Drum compressor or drum bus compressor
A free drum compressor plugin and a free drum bus compressor can be the same download. What
changes is where you put it. On a single kick or snare, a compressor shapes that one hit: how
fast the front edge comes through, how long the body hangs. On the
drum bus, it hears every drum summed and moves
them together, which is where density and the sound of one room come from.
Start on the bus. Most kits built from breaks and one-shots need one compressor across the group
far more than they need eight on the channels. A break already went through somebody's chain once,
on a record, and compressing each slice again mostly flattens what you liked about it. If one drum
still jumps out after the bus is working, compress that drum on its own. The
drum compression guide has the per-drum
settings.
Which free drum compressor plugin to use
DRUGS: the one we built for the bus
DRUGS has one macro control. DOSE moves the transfer curve, the knee, the attack and the release
together, so turning it up reshapes the break instead of leveling it, and brings the room up under
the hits. The release adapts on its own, shorter after a hit and longer on sustained material, which
is the part of drum bus compression people most often get wrong by hand. MIX blends dry and wet
with zero latency, so parallel compression never comb-filters. One Japanese reviewer, in
translation: "Getting compression with an attack this fast from a free plugin is pretty welcome."
TDR Kotelnikov: every control, nothing added
Tokyo Dawn's free compressor gives you separate releases for peak and RMS content, a sidechain
high-pass and a delta preview that plays only what is being taken away. It colors very little. Use
it when you want to set the attack and release by number and hear the dynamics change without any
tone change on top.
RoughRider3: the hammer for single drums
Audio Damage calls RoughRider3 its free compressor that has been "flattening drums since 2008,"
with a ratio that runs up to 1:1000. That is a lot of compressor for a whole bus and very useful on
a snare or a room channel you want crushed and blended back in.
Klanghelm's DC1A, listed by its maker as a free "effortless character comp," is the other name
you will see in every thread. For a drum bus our order is DRUGS, then Kotelnikov if you need the
numbers, and the character boxes on single channels.
DOSE 95, MIX 45. Hard compression blended back under the dry drums, with no send and no delay to line up.
How to set up a free drum bus compressor
- Route every drum track, or the break and its layers, to one bus.
- Balance the drums against each other with the faders before inserting anything.
- Insert DRUGS on the bus with DOSE at zero.
- Loop four bars with every drum playing.
- Turn DOSE up until the room comes forward under the hits.
- Lower MIX if the front of the hits starts to soften.
- Bypass and re-engage at matched level, then play the loop on a phone speaker.
If you use a compressor with the usual controls instead, the starting point is 4:1, a 20 ms
attack, a release near one eighth note at your tempo and 2 to 4 dB of gain reduction on the
loudest hits. The drum bus compressor
settings page explains each number.
Step seven is the one that matters. A bus that is louder after the compressor will win every
comparison for the first few seconds whether it is better or not. DRUGS ships with GAIN on, adding
5 dB after the compressor, so match levels with your ears or a meter before you judge.
Where a free drum compressor falls short
Price is the only thing free removes. Every other cost of bus compression stays. Squash a kit
hard enough to sound huge in a loop and it turns relentless over a whole song, because the fills no
longer stand above the groove. Compress before balancing and every later fader move drags the whole
kit with it.
The other cost is time spent auditioning. Ten free compressors on a drum bus is an afternoon of
comparisons at mismatched levels, and most of the differences you hear will be loudness. Pick one
for the bus, learn it, and spend the afternoon on the beat.
Questions people ask
What compressor should I use on the drum bus?
A bus compressor that recovers in time with the song. Ours, DRUGS, is free and does that with an
adaptive release. With a manual compressor, set a 10 to 30 ms attack and a release near an
eighth note, and aim for 2 to 4 dB of reduction.
Which free drum compressor plugin is considered the best?
The names that keep coming up in producer threads and roundups are TDR Kotelnikov, Klanghelm DC1A and
RoughRider3. For the drum bus specifically we would start with DRUGS, because it was voiced for
breaks and asks for one decision instead of six.
What is the best free compressor plugin?
That depends on the job. For drums and the drum bus, DRUGS. For transparent control on a master,
Kotelnikov. For crushing a single channel, RoughRider3. The
free compressor guide sorts the rest by slot.
Where can I download a free compressor plugin?
From the maker. DRUGS downloads from its page on this site. Tokyo Dawn, Klanghelm and Audio
Damage host their free plugins on their own sites. Skip the mirror sites and anything called a
free download of a paid plugin; that is where the malware risk sits.
Should I compress each drum or the whole drum bus?
The bus first. It makes the kit sound like one performance and often fixes what you were about
to fix drum by drum. Add single-channel compression only where one sound still sticks out.
What DRUGS does
DRUGS is our free bus compressor for drums. DOSE is the one macro control, and
peak level barely moves across its range while the drums get denser. The release adapts to the
material and auto-makeup sits after the gain cell. MIX is dry/wet with zero
latency, GAIN adds 5 dB after the compressor and LIMIT is a
soft ceiling at −0.3 dBFS. VST3, AU and standalone on macOS 10.13 or later, universal
for Apple Silicon and Intel. VST3 on 64-bit Windows 10 or later.
Same break, same sampler. The room is back behind the snare, and it cost nothing.
