The TR-909

The machine that made house and techno is half analog and half sampled, and
almost nobody can tell you which half is which. The kick's tuning knob does not set the pitch,
either. It is worth knowing what you are actually turning.
The Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer arrived in 1983 or 1984 depending on which source you
trust, cost around $1,195, and about 10,000 were built before it was discontinued. Its voices are
mostly analog circuits, with exactly three exceptions: the hi-hats, the crash and the ride are
6-bit samples stored in ROM. It was one of the first drum machines with MIDI, it sold badly, and
it ended up as the rhythmic foundation of Chicago house and Detroit techno once it hit the
secondhand market.

Which voices are which
This is the most commonly garbled fact about the machine. Only three voices are sampled: the
hi-hats, which share one ROM with an address range selecting open or closed, the crash, and the
ride. Everything else is generated by circuitry, including the hand clap and the rim shot, which
sound so much like samples that reviewers at the time remarked on it.
The samples themselves are 6-bit and heavily compressed to make the most of those bits, which
is exactly why the 909's cymbals sound the way they do. That thin, grainy, slightly nasty crash
is not a design flaw or a worn-out sample: it is the sound of a very small amount of data being
asked to represent a cymbal.
The kick, and the knob that lies
The panel says TUNE. The manual says it sets the pitch. Two independent analyses of the
circuit say something different: what it actually controls is the decay time of a falling pitch
sweep, roughly 30 to 120 milliseconds as the machine ships, and there is nothing on the front
panel that sets the base frequency at all.
That explains something every 909 user has noticed without being able to name it. Turning TUNE
up does not give you a higher note; it gives you a longer, more pronounced downward bend at the
start of the hit, which reads as more pitch and more punch. ATTACK is the same kind of
mislabeling: it sets the level of a click, a short noise burst at the front of the kick, rather
than an envelope time.
If you are trying to program 909-style kicks in a plugin, that is the actual recipe: a low
sine with a fast downward pitch envelope of a few tens of milliseconds, plus a separate click
layer you can turn up and down.

Accent is not just volume
The accent system works by sending a control voltage into the envelope circuits, which means
an accented hit is not simply louder: it is longer, because the envelope capacitors get charged
further. Some voices ignore accent entirely in certain respects, like the snare's pitch
component.
That is why a 909 pattern with accents programmed in feels like a performance rather than a
loop with some hits turned up, and it is why velocity alone in a DAW does not reproduce the
effect. If you want it, you need velocity mapped to decay as well as level.
Against the 808
The TR-808 is fully analog and its voices ring and die on
their own. The 909 is a hybrid, its kick is built around a pitch sweep rather than a ringing
filter, and its cymbals are low-resolution digital audio. In practice the 808 gives you long
tuned low end and the 909 gives you a shorter, punchier kick with a click, which is most of why
one became the foundation of hip hop and the other the foundation of dance music.
It also sold badly
Roughly 10,000 units, discontinued quickly, and in the years afterward they turned up cheap:
one Detroit producer has described buying his out of a pawnshop for fifty dollars. By the
mid-nineties they were several hundred pounds; today a serviced one is a few thousand dollars,
and a unit with provenance has attracted five-figure offers. The pattern is identical to the
808's, one generation later.
The reissues and emulations are numerous and the current hardware versions are made by Roland
itself, so the sound is no longer gated behind the original machine. What the original still has
is the calibration drift of an analog kit and the exact quantization noise of those 6-bit
cymbals.
Questions people ask
Is the TR-909 analog or digital?
Both. The kick, snare, toms, rim shot and hand clap are analog circuits. The hi-hats, crash

What to take from it
Three things you can use tonight without owning one. A 909-style kick is a sine with a fast
downward pitch envelope plus a separate click layer. Accents should lengthen a hit, not just
raise it. And the cymbals are supposed to sound cheap: if you are layering a pristine crash over
a 909 pattern, you are removing the part that makes it a 909.
