Free soft clipper plugins, and the one already in FL Studio
The 808 is finally loud enough and the master meter is finally red. Every FL Studio producer arrives at the same search on the same night, and the answer was already in the mixer slot menu before the search began.
FL Studio ships a soft clipper in every edition, Fruity Soft Clipper, with two controls. Live ships one inside Saturator, in every edition including Intro. Logic ships Clip Distortion. Beyond the stock ones, six third-party clippers are current and free to keep: Venn Audio Free Clip 2, Kazrog KClip Zero, Kilohearts Clipper, Initial Clipper 2, GVST GClip and Analog Obsession RazorClip. The step up from all of them is a clipper that also saturates, on one knob, which is what BEEFY is, for $39. Start with what is installed.

What a soft clipper does, in one paragraph
A soft clipper rounds the loudest peaks on a curve instead of chopping them flat. It has no attack or release, because it reshapes the waveform sample by sample, so it does not pump. It lowers peak level more than average level, which is the whole trick: with the peaks shaved, the track can come up at the same ceiling and reads louder. The rounding is distortion, mostly odd harmonics from a symmetric curve, and that is where the grit comes from. The long version is soft clipping explained.
Soft clipper in FL Studio: Fruity Soft Clipper
Image-Line's manual calls Fruity Soft Clipper "a CPU-friendly soft limiter", and it is included in all editions, Fruity upward. Two controls. Threshold is "the volume threshold above which Soft Clipper will compress the audio signal", and Post Gain is the "volume level applied after the compression". There is an output meter and a levels display you can drag to move the threshold. That is the entire panel.
What it does not have is as useful to know. No oversampling control, no knee or softness control, no input gain. Drive it with the mixer fader or the channel volume, set Threshold where the 808's peaks start to round, and bring Post Gain down to match the bypassed level before you judge it. Fruity Limiter, also in every edition, has a saturation stage rather than a clipper; its manual says signals "reaching into the red region will be saturated" and suggests you can "blend in some 'Soft-clipping' from the saturation". Maximus, Producer Edition and up, is a multiband maximizer and its page never uses the word clip.
Soft clipper in Ableton Live: Saturator
Live's Saturator is a waveshaper, and Ableton's compare page lists it in Intro, Standard and Suite. The clipper lives in two places on it. The Post Clip Mode switch offers Soft Clip and Hard Clip, which keep the output at or below the Output level. And the curve chooser has Analog Clip, which "introduces a smoother transition around the clipping point", beside Soft Sine, Bass Shaper, Medium Curve, Hard Curve, Sinoid Fold, Digital Clip and Waveshaper. Hi-Quality in the title-bar menu "reduces aliasing and improves sound quality". Live's Limiter, also in every edition, has a Ceiling Mode with Standard, Soft Clip and True Peak, so a soft clip is one click away on the master as well. More on the routing in saturating a drum bus in Live.
Logic Pro: Clip Distortion, and why "logic clipper" finds nothing
Logic's stock clipper is Clip Distortion, under Distortion. Apple describe it as "a nonlinear distortion effect that produces unpredictable harmonic spectra", and the signal path is specific: the input is amplified by Drive, passes a highpass filter, hits the nonlinear stage, then a lowpass, then is mixed with the dry signal and filtered once more. Controls are Input Gain, Drive, Tone, Symmetry, Clip Filter, Mix, High Shelving with up to 30 dB of gain, LP Filter and Output Gain. There is no ceiling control, so it clips where Drive puts it rather than at a level you set. For a ceiling, Adaptive Limiter rounds and smooths peaks with an Out Ceiling, and Apple note it "can slightly color the sound". Search "logic clipper" and you get hardware test clips for logic probes, which is why this section exists.
Free clipper VST plugins, and what each one asks of you
Six are current and free to keep. Three need an account; three do not.
Venn Audio Free Clip 2 comes inside Free Suite, which Venn describe as "a completely free, performant, light weight, resizeable, zero fuss set of cross-platform audio plugins" for Windows, Mac and Linux in VST3, AU and AAX. "No registration needed." It replaced the original Free Clip and is the most-named free clipper in the roundups for a reason.
Kazrog KClip Zero is "100% FREE", with oversampling fixed at 2x live and 16x on render, a resizable window and a real-time clipping display. It downloads through Kazrog's plugin manager. The paid KClip 3 is $39.99 and adds eight clipping modes, multiband and mid-side, and oversampling up to 32x.
Kilohearts Clipper is "free with an account", and it is a per-sample clipper with Threshold, In Gain, Knee and Out Gain. Kilohearts say it "lets you trim the peaks of your audio in order to leave some headroom", which is the mastering use in one sentence.
Initial Clipper 2 is Initial Audio's free soft clipper "for maximum loudness", with Input Gain, a soft-knee Threshold, a saturation curve, Ceiling, Output and an integrated LUFS meter. VST3, AU and AAX, Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.13 and up. A free Initial Audio account is required for the installers.
GVST GClip is a free VST with Gain, Clip as a percentage of full scale, a Softness control for the shape of the knee, and a 2x Oversample switch. The smallest panel on this list and the one that teaches you most about what the knee does.
Analog Obsession RazorClip, released February 2026, is a free clipper with five circuit models, Tape, XFMR, BJT, Tube and Diode, plus a gain-compensated input, an output from −24 to +24 dB and a Blend control. VST3, AU and AAX, no registration, downloaded from the maker's Patreon page.
Two more worth knowing. Airwindows ClipOnly2 has no controls at all: it clips at about −0.2 dBFS and "suppresses the brightness of digital clipping without affecting unclipped samples", free and open source. And Limiter No6 from vladg/sound is a free limiter whose stages include a clipper, for Windows and Mac, no AAX.
Where BEEFY sits next to the free ones
Straight about it: BEEFY is $39 and has no free version, so it does not belong on this page on price. It belongs here because every free clipper above is a clipper and nothing else. BEEFY is a saturation and loudness plugin with the clipper built in. BEEF adds weight, density and loudness as you turn it up. SOFT CLIP opens switched on and takes care of the initial gain staging, so there is no input level to hunt for. COOK moves the color from rounder toward brighter and more bitten, JUICE sets the level going in, and LIMIT is the alternative output stage if you want peaks held rather than rounded. The input and output clip lights tell you which end is working.
So the honest split is this. If you need a ceiling and nothing added, Fruity Soft Clipper or any of the six free downloads does the job today. If what you actually wanted was the 808 to get thicker and louder in one move, with the clipping as part of the sound rather than a safety rail, that is the $39, and the demo on the page is 28 seconds.
BEEFY runs in FL Studio as a VST3 on Windows and as VST3 or AU on the Mac. Put it on the 808 or the drum bus, turn BEEF up, and stop when the cow looks worried.
How to set a free soft clipper
The method is the same on every one of them, stock or downloaded. Work on the loudest eight bars.
- Insert the clipper last on the channel, after EQ and compression.
- Set the ceiling or threshold to −1.0 dBFS.
- Raise the input until the clip indicator lights on the loudest hits only.
- Watch the gain reduction or the waveform display and stop at 2 to 3 dB on the peaks.
- Lower the output until the bypassed and clipped versions match in loudness.
- Toggle bypass at matched level and listen to the hi-hats, not the kick.
- If the plugin has oversampling, turn it on and compare the top end again.
Step six is the real test. The kick survives clipping long after the hats have started to sound like they were recorded through a cheaper microphone, because everything sounding at the moment the kick drives the curve gets distorted with it. The order of the chain is covered in clipper before limiter.
What a free clipper costs you
Aliasing, mostly. A clipper generates harmonics above half the sample rate and those fold back down as out-of-tune hash, which is why the free ones that have oversampling (GClip, KClip Zero) are worth the extra CPU and Fruity Soft Clipper has none. It costs transients: the snare's crack is the first thing to go blunt. And it costs you the ability to undo it on the master, so clip the 808 and the drum bus where you can hear what it did, and leave the final ceiling to a limiter. The 808 loudness guide works through that order on the one sound that needs it most.
Questions people ask
Does FL Studio have a soft clipper?
Yes. Fruity Soft Clipper is included in every edition, with Threshold and Post Gain and nothing else. Fruity Limiter adds a saturation stage that Image-Line describe as a way to blend in soft clipping, and Maximus, from Producer Edition up, is a multiband maximizer rather than a clipper.
What is the best free soft clipper plugin?
For a ceiling with no account, Venn Free Clip 2. For oversampling at no cost, KClip Zero or GClip. For a LUFS meter in the same window, Initial Clipper 2. For color, RazorClip's five circuit models. All six are genuinely free, with no trial timer.
Is there a free clipper for Ableton Live?
One is already installed. Saturator's Post Clip Mode has a Soft Clip setting and the Analog Clip curve is a soft clipper on its own, in every edition of Live 12. The Limiter's Ceiling Mode has a Soft Clip option as well.
Does Logic Pro have a clipper plugin?
Clip Distortion, under Distortion, with Drive and Symmetry but no ceiling control. For a set ceiling, Adaptive Limiter rounds the peaks and holds an Out Ceiling. Any of the free AU clippers above loads in Logic too.
Soft clipper or limiter on the 808?
Clipper on the 808, limiter on the master. The clipper rounds the peaks of one sound where you can hear the harmonics it adds, and the limiter catches whatever is left at the end of the chain. Clipping into a limiter is the standard order and clipper before limiter explains why.
Is a free clipper as good as a paid one?
At the clipping itself, mostly yes: the curve is simple arithmetic. What paid clippers add is oversampling depth, multiple curves, multiband and metering. SIR Audio Tools' StandardCLIP is $25, Kazrog KClip 3 is $39.99, Newfangled Saturate is $49 and Boz Digital's Big Clipper is $29 at the moment. The best soft clipper plugins guide compares them.
Where does the soft clipper go in FL Studio's mixer?
Last in the slot list on the 808's mixer track, or on the drum bus insert, after the compressor. Match Post Gain to the bypassed level before deciding whether it helped.
What BEEFY does
BEEFY is our saturation and loudness plugin for Mac and Windows, $39, one payment. BEEF is the main event: more weight, density and loudness as it goes up. COOK changes the color and bite, from rounder toward brighter and more cooked. JUICE sets the level going in. SOFT CLIP opens switched on and handles the initial gain staging; LIMIT is the other output stage, and the two are separate choices. Input and output clip lights, a cow that reacts to the audio, two finishes. VST3, AU and standalone on the Mac for Apple Silicon and Intel, VST3 on 64-bit Windows. How to mix drums puts it in the chain.
The meter is still red. Now it is red because you told it to be.
