How to make drums sound dusty

Your drums are immaculate. Every hit is on the grid, the snare has a
sheen you could shave in, and the whole thing sounds like it was assembled in a clean room by
people wearing gloves. That is the problem.
Dusty drums are band-limited, compressed until the room comes up, slightly distorted and
slightly out of time. To get there: roll the top off somewhere between 8 and 12 kHz, reduce the
sample rate or bit depth until the highs turn grainy, saturate lightly, compress the bus so the
quiet material rises behind the hits, add a bed of noise, and move a few hits off the grid by
10 to 25 ms. Each move alone sounds broken. Together they sound like a record.

What dust actually is
Old drums sound old for reasons you can list. A limited top end, because tape, vinyl and
cheap samplers all ran out of highs. A raised noise floor, because every stage in the chain
added some. Compression, because everything in the path squeezed a little. Harmonic distortion,
because nothing in 1972 was clean. And human timing, because a person played it.
Those are five separate faults, and modern drums have none of them. Add them back one at a
time and you can hear what each is worth. Add them all at once and you will overdo every one,
which is why most attempts at dusty end up sounding merely broken.
How to make drums sound dusty
- Low-pass the drum bus from about 10 kHz, then move it until the hats lose their sparkle
without going dull.
- Add a crusher: lower the sample rate first, and only then the bit depth.
- Saturate lightly, 1 to 2 dB of drive, enough to round the transients.
- Compress the bus until the room and the bleed behind the hits come up.
- Add a noise bed 30 to 40 dB below the drums and leave it running.
- Drag two or three hits 10 to 25 ms late, and one early.
- High-pass at 30 to 40 Hz to clear the rumble the saturation just made louder.
- Bypass everything and compare at matched level, then take one thing back out.
The order matters
Filter before you crush, or the crusher spends its resolution on highs you are about to
throw away. Compress after the dirt, so the compressor reacts to what you actually made.
Add noise last, so it does not get compressed into a pulsing wash by everything downstream.
If the top end sounds harsh rather than dark after crushing, that is aliasing: content folded
back down to frequencies that have no musical relationship to the source. It is a legitimate
part of this sound and it is also the first thing to go too far.

Timing is half of it
Grid-perfect drums announce themselves faster than any amount of top end. A human drummer
varies by tens of milliseconds, and the variation is not random: hats rush slightly, snares sit
back, kicks land early when the player is pushing. Move a few hits and vary the velocities by 10
to 15 percent and the kit starts to sound like it has a person behind it.

Where it costs you
Dust is subtraction, and subtraction shows up on small speakers. A low-pass at 8 kHz that
sounds warm on monitors can leave the hats inaudible on a phone, because the phone was relying
on that range to tell you there was a hi-hat at all. Noise stacks too: one bed is texture, and
the same bed on five busses is hiss. And heavy crushing eats the low end's definition, so check
the kick against the bass after every step rather than at the end.
Questions people ask
How do you make drums sound muffled?
Low-pass the drum bus and move the cutoff down until the top disappears, then add a little
saturation so the remaining midrange keeps some bite. A shelf cut of 4 to 6 dB above 6 kHz is a
gentler version of the same thing.
How do you make drums sound old?
Limit the top end, reduce the resolution, saturate lightly, compress until the room rises,
add noise, and take the drums off the grid. Doing all six a little goes further than doing one
of them a lot.
How do you make drums sound softer?
Soften the transients rather than the tone: a compressor with a fast attack, or a light
clipper on the peaks, takes the edge off the front of each hit while leaving the body. Lowering
the top end afterward makes the whole kit sit back.
