The Minimoog Voyager

In 1970 Bob Moog put a synthesizer in a wooden case with a keyboard on it
and no patch cables, because working musicians could not carry a wall of modules to a gig.
Thirty-two years later, having lost and won back the right to use his own name, he did it
again.
The Minimoog Voyager is a monophonic analog synthesizer designed by Robert Moog and released
by Moog Music in the summer of 2002, the first new Minimoog since the original Model D went out
of production in the early eighties. It keeps the three-oscillator, ladder-filter architecture of the 1970
instrument and adds a second filter, patch memory, MIDI, CV inputs and a touch surface.
Production ran for thirteen years and ended in September 2015, after more than 14,000 units:
slightly more than the original Minimoog ever sold.

Why it exists
The original Minimoog was a practical answer to an impractical instrument. Modular systems
cost tens of thousands of dollars and had to be patched by hand for every sound, so Moog's
engineers hard-wired the most useful connections, bolted on a keyboard and made something a
band could put in a van. It ran from 1970 into the early eighties and sold over 12,000 units, which for an
instrument that plays one note at a time is a strange kind of triumph.
Then Moog lost the company. The name went with it, and for years he traded as Big Briar,
building theremins and effects while other people sold instruments with his surname on them. He
got the trademark back and renamed the company Moog Music in 2002, and the Voyager arrived the
same year. The first 600 were Signature Editions at $3,495, each one carrying his autograph.
Bob Moog died on 21 August 2005, of a brain tumor diagnosed that April, three years into the
production run of the instrument that brought his name home.
What is actually on the panel
Three oscillators with triangle, sawtooth, square and narrow rectangular waves, tunable
across a wide range, with oscillator three doubling as a second modulation source. A noise
generator and an external input, so you can run other instruments through the filters.
Two filters, which is the biggest musical change from the Model D. In dual lowpass mode you
get two ladder filters, one per channel, with a SPACING control that offsets them from each
other: a single sound with two different amounts of brightness in it, which in stereo reads as
width and in mono as a subtle formant. In highpass-lowpass mode the same pair becomes a band,
and spacing sets how wide it is. Two ADSR envelopes, one for the filter and one for the
amplifier. An LFO from 0.2 to 50 Hz with triangle, square and two flavors of sample and hold.
Then the modern parts: 128 patch locations expandable to 896, MIDI in, out and through, 14 CV
and gate inputs on the back for anyone who wants to treat it as a module again, and a touch
surface that reports three values at once from where your finger is and how much of it is
touching. The touch surface is the part people either build their playing around or never use
twice.

- Electric Blue (2005 on) and the Select Series (2006 on),
which let buyers specify cabinet and lighting.
- Rack Mount Edition (2005): five rack spaces, MIDI controlled, and
stackable up to sixteen units for polyphony by brute force.
- Old School (2008–09): no memory, no MIDI, no touch surface. A Model

- XL (2010): 61 keys, a ribbon controller and a patch bay.
- 10th Anniversary Gold (2012): 31 units, 24-karat gold, $15,000.
What it is good at
Bass, first. One oscillator an octave down, a second detuned by a few cents against it, the
filter low and the envelope doing most of the work: that is a bass line that occupies the whole
bottom of a record without a single dB of EQ. Two filters make it more interesting than the
usual monosynth bottom, because you can let one of them pass a little more of the harmonics than
the other and get bite and weight from the same note.
Leads and hooks, second, especially with the touch surface mapped to filter cutoff, so the
phrase moves because your hand moved. And thirdly the thing monosynths are worst at and this one
is unusually good at: sitting quietly. Turn the resonance down, open the filters halfway, play
chords one note at a time, and it behaves like an instrument in a room rather than a machine
making a noise.
There is a hip hop footnote worth having. A Voyager that belonged to
J Dilla is in the Smithsonian's National Museum of
African American History and Culture, donated by his mother in 2014 along with his sampler, its
power cord, a cable and the factory soft case. The museum's record puts its serial number at
263, inside the first run, and dates it 2002 to 2005. The instrument is not in that case as a
synthesizer. It is there as evidence about how a particular producer worked.
Where it costs you
It plays one note at a time, it is heavy, and it costs more used now than several polyphonic
instruments that will do more of the obvious jobs. Analog oscillators drift, so tuning is a
habit rather than an event. The patch memory stores panel positions, which means recalling a
patch leaves every physical knob pointing at the wrong value until you move it, and that trips
people who came from digital instruments. And the touch surface rewards practice in a way that
is genuinely off-putting for the first month.
Against all of that: it is one of the few instruments where the difference between a beginner
and someone who has lived with it is audible in four notes.

What is special about the Moog Voyager?

their spacing control, and the three-axis touch surface, are the parts you cannot get on the
original.
What are the differences between the Voyager and the original Minimoog?
The Model D of 1970 has one lowpass ladder filter, no patch memory, no MIDI and no CV inputs
beyond the basics. The Voyager has two filters with a spacing control, 128 presets expandable to
896, full MIDI, 14 CV and gate inputs, a touch surface, and a velocity- and pressure-sensitive
keyboard. The core sound is closely related; the control over it is not.
Is the Minimoog discontinued?
Voyager production ended in September 2015 after thirteen years. Moog has since reissued the
original Model D twice, in 2016 and again in 2022, so a new Minimoog has been available on and
off since, but not the Voyager.
How many Minimoog Voyagers were made?
More than 14,000 across all variants over thirteen years, which is slightly more than the
original Minimoog managed in its own production run.
Is the Voyager polyphonic?
No. It plays one note at a time, with low, high or last-note priority. The Rack Mount Edition
could be stacked, up to sixteen units, for people who wanted polyphony badly enough to buy it
sixteen times.
Two instruments, thirty-two years apart, built for the same reason: put the thing in a case
a person can carry, and let them play it with their hands.
