How to mix vocals

The beat is finished, the rapper is good, and the vocal is either sitting
on top of the track like a sticker or buried somewhere behind the hats. There is no in-between
setting, and no plugin fixes it, because the problem happened before the plugins.
Mix vocals in this order: get the level right against the beat with no processing, cut the
problems with EQ, control the performance with compression, add saturation or clipping if it
needs weight, then place it in space with delay and reverb. The single biggest improvement for
most people is not a plugin at all: it is riding the level line by line so the words are all the
same size before a compressor ever sees them.

Level first, and level again
A vocal take has a 15 dB range between the quietest word and the loudest, and no compressor
handles that gracefully on its own. If you ask one to, it will pump on the loud words and let
the quiet ones vanish. Draw the level line instead: go through the take and raise the words that
disappear and lower the ones that jump, until the waveform looks roughly even. Then compress
what is left, which will be a few decibels rather than fifteen.
This is boring and it is the difference between an amateur vocal and a professional one. It is
also how it was done before plugins, by hand, on a fader.
The chain
- Set the vocal level against the beat with everything bypassed.
- High-pass at 80 to 120 Hz, higher for a thin voice, lower for a deep one.
- Cut the resonances that stick out, narrow and only where you hear a problem.
- Compress: 3:1, attack 5 to 10 ms, release 60 to 150 ms, 3 to 6 dB on the loud words.
- If it needs more control, use a second compressor doing 3 dB rather than one doing 8.
- De-ess after compression, because compression brings sibilance forward.
- Add saturation or a clipper for density and to stop the peaks running away.
- Send to one short delay and one reverb, and duck both under the dry vocal.
- Check on a phone before you decide anything is finished.

Making it fit rather than sit on top
A vocal that sounds stuck on the front is usually competing with the beat rather than sharing
with it. Three things fix it. Carve a small dip in the instrumental where the voice lives, around
1 to 3 kHz, using a compressor on the beat bus triggered by the vocal if you want it automatic.
Match the spaces: a dry vocal over a wet beat always sounds pasted on. And commit to a level
choice: in rap the vocal usually sits further forward than in almost any other genre, and trying
to split the difference produces something that reads as neither.

Where it costs you
Every stage here takes something. High-passing takes weight off a deep voice if you go too
far. Compression brings up breaths, room noise and mouth sounds, all of which you then have to
edit. Saturation adds harmonics in exactly the range where sibilance lives. And reverb buys
space at the cost of clarity, which is why a rap vocal usually gets a short delay rather than a
long reverb.

What is the correct order for mixing vocals?
Level and rides, then subtractive EQ, then compression, then de-essing, then saturation, then
time-based effects on sends. The order matters because each stage changes what the next one
reacts to.
How do I make vocals fit in the mix?
Make room rather than turning the vocal up: a small dip in the instrumental around 1 to 3 kHz,
matched reverb between the voice and the track, and level rides so no word disappears. Turning it
up alone gets you a vocal that is loud and still unclear.
Is it better to mix vocals quiet or loud?
Make decisions at conversation volume, where your ears are flattest, and check loud
occasionally. A vocal balance set at high volume almost always turns out too quiet the next
day.
How much compression should a vocal have?
Three to six decibels on the loudest words, or two stages of about three decibels each if the
take is uneven. If you need more than that, ride the level first and compress afterward.
